EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — Hector Tavarez had been approached before about entering politics by Democrats and Republicans in the past, but the former police captain and driving force behind Atlantic County and Egg Harbor Township’s impressive Police Activities League always said no.

 

That changed Jan. 6.

 

The siege on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then President Donald Trump pushed Tavarez over the top. Tavarez also found unacceptable the actions of his District 2 Congressman Jeff Van Drew during that time.

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — A retired Egg Harbor Township police captain has become the second Democrat to enter the race to challenge Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) in New Jersey’s 2nd district next year.

 

Hector Tavarez, the co-founder and executive director of the Egg Harbor Township Police Athletic League, said he decided to run for Congress after watching the U.S. Capitol insurrection on January 6.

 

Over the years, I’ve considered running for office but never did for one simple reason.  I was always convinced that the good we were doing for the PAL kids far outweighed any benefit I could produce as a local politician,” Tavarez stated.  “That all began to change for me after watching violence across our nation for months.”

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — Retired Egg Harbor Township police Capt. Hector Tavarez said Wednesday he will seek the 2022 Democratic nomination for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District.

 

“Over the years, I’ve considered running for office but never did for one simple reason,” Tavarez said in a news release. “I was always convinced that the good we were doing for the PAL kids far outweighed any benefit I could produce as a local politician.”

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — Hector Tavarez, a retired police captain from the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, announced today that he would seek the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District. If successful, Tavarez, who is also the co-founder and Executive Director of the Egg Harbor Township Police Activities League (EHT PAL) and the Police Activities League of Atlantic County, would face incumbent Jeff Van Drew in the fall of 2022.
